The Moroccan bath — known in Arabic as hammam — is one of the oldest and most complete body care rituals in the world. Practised for centuries across North Africa and the Middle East, it combines heat therapy, deep cleansing, exfoliation, and mineralizing skin treatment into a single continuous experience that leaves the body and skin in a genuinely different state than a standard massage can achieve.

At Doral Spa in Al Forsan, Khalifa City Abu Dhabi, the Moroccan bath ritual is performed in a dedicated steam environment. Every step is carried out by hand using authentic materials: savon beldi (black soap), a kessa exfoliation glove, and ghassoul clay mask — the same ingredients used in traditional hammams across Morocco and the Gulf.
For Abu Dhabi residents and visitors searching for a hammam that takes the ritual seriously rather than offering a spa-modified shortcut, Doral Spa’s Moroccan bath is one of the most complete options available in Khalifa City.
Step 1: Steam preparation (10–15 min)
The body enters the steam room to open the pores and soften the skin’s surface layer. Heat penetrates deeply into the muscle tissue, relaxing the entire musculoskeletal system and preparing the skin for what follows.
Step 2: Black soap application (savon beldi)
Authentic Moroccan black soap — made from olive oil, water, and potassium hydroxide — is applied across the full body and left to absorb for several minutes. Black soap softens the dead skin layer at a cellular level, making the subsequent exfoliation dramatically more effective than dry scrubbing alone.
Step 3: Kessa exfoliation
A traditional kessa mitt (exfoliation glove) is used to remove the loosened dead skin in long, firm strokes. The result — visible rolls of dead skin being shed — is the most visible marker of how much the steam and black soap have prepared the skin. This step typically removes several layers of accumulated surface cells.
Step 4: Ghassoul clay mask
Ghassoul (also spelled rhassoul) is a rare volcanic clay mined from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Rich in silica, magnesium, and potassium, it is applied over the body and face as a thick mask, drawing out impurities and delivering minerals directly to the skin. After resting for several minutes, the mask is rinsed with warm water.
Step 5: Final rinse and rest
A graduated rinse — moving from warm to cool — closes the pores and completes the ritual. Clients typically rest afterward in the relaxation area, as the body continues processing the treatment for 30–60 minutes.
The Moroccan bath pairs naturally with massage. The steam and exfoliation open the tissue, making massage strokes more effective and penetrating than in a standard session. Doral Spa offers the following combinations:

The Moroccan bath serves clients who want results on the skin as well as the body:
Skin renewal and detox
— the combination of steam, black soap, and kessa exfoliation is the most effective non-chemical skin resurfacing available without a clinical setting
Pre-event treatment
— skin is visibly brighter and softer for 5–7 days after a Moroccan bath; popular before weddings, formal events, or photography
Gulf residents familiar with hammam tradition
— the Doral Spa ritual uses authentic methods and materials, not a simplified spa version
Visitors to Abu Dhabi
wanting to experience authentic hammam culture in a premium setting
Anyone whose skin has been dulled by sun exposure, hard water, or environmental factors
— Abu Dhabi’s hard water and intense sun accelerate skin surface buildup

Good to Know
A Moroccan bath is a traditional body cleansing ritual originating in North Africa. It uses heat (steam), black olive soap, an exfoliation glove (kessa), and mineral clay (ghassoul) to deep-cleanse and resurface the skin. At Doral Spa in Abu Dhabi, the full ritual takes 45–60 minutes and uses authentic Moroccan materials.
Once every 3–4 weeks is optimal for skin maintenance. The exfoliation removes the dead skin layer, which regenerates over approximately 4 weeks.
The kessa exfoliation can be adjusted for pressure. Inform your therapist if you have sensitive or reactive skin and the technique will be modified. The black soap and ghassoul clay are both free of harsh chemicals and generally well-tolerated.
Yes — Doral Spa offers combined packages. The bath is always performed before the massage. See the packages section above.
